Cachaca
is the official name of the beverage, and the historically correct one (an adaptation
of the name invented over 400 years ago), but it is popularly known by more than
300 nicknames, many of them regional, almost always feminine, affectionate
names, in spite of the damage that can be sustained by those who appreciate it
in excess. Branquinha, Purinha, Carinha - little names that say it all, but are
untranslatable to any other tongue.
Drunk neat, on the rocks, or otherwise embellished, Cachaca is the basis for
the most popular Brazilian drink: caipirinha - another name with no translation,
but equally affectionate and an indispensable companion to accompany - before,
during and after - the most Brazilian of dishes, feijoada (a sort of cassoulet
with black beans, beef and pork and all sorts of accessories, like manioc flour,
kale and others).
